As regular shoppers to Midway Cellars know I am always looking for new and quirky products. The cider rage is developing big time at the moment and everyone seems to be making one. Fosters and Tooheys are making what I would call "pseudo ciders" as they are made with a combination of pear and apples. This is not the way to make proper cider.
Thankfully, there are a few good wine makers making real ciders. Kellybrook and Bress are just two that are making ciders in the traditional way. Adam Marks, winemaker for Bress, visited our shop recently and we got talking about cider. He is one passionate winemaker and loves making his cider, a technique he learnt in France while doing vintage in Burgundy.
He grows cider apples on his property at Harcourt, about 80 minutes out of Melbourne and turns these into beautiful dry and sweet ciders. When people finally stop drinking the commercial garbage that the multi-nationals are producing for the quick buck on the back of a fad, you will know that you can come to Midway Cellars and still find a cider made with love and attention to detail.
